31 single parent tips in 31 days. #7: Have an emergency bag (of tricks)

#7: Have an emergency bag (of tricks)

I’ve found that sometimes single parenthood is like parenting on a plane – you have to keep things calm at all costs. This is for moments like: you have to complete an important phone call and you have been on hold for 51 minutes and the moment someone live is on the other end you suddenly have a toddler up from his nap and tantruming in front of your eyes. You know. This tip may apply most to toddlers, but I’d love to hear what works for older children. Here is what is in my bag:

Paint with water kits

Markers and a coloring book

A favorite fruit pouch

A toy phone for my toddler to make his own “calls”

Chalk for the chalkboard

A new book with lots of details to look at

What about you – what is in your bag of tricks?
